Matteo Bassetti is Head of the Infectious Diseases Division of the Santa Maria Misericordia University Hospital, Udine, Italy. He is also Professor of Infectious Diseases at School of Medicine and Postgraduate School of Infectious Diseases of the University of Udine. Dr Bassetti studied at the University of Genoa School of Medicine and continued his medical education at the Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, USA with an Infectious Diseases fellowship. He also completed a PhD in Solid Organ Transplantation and Infectious Diseases at the University of Genoa School of Medicine. Dr Bassetti worked as coordinator of the Infectious Diseases Consultation Team and member of the Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology Unit, San Martino Teaching Hospital, Genoa, Italy from 2001–2011. Dr Bassetti is the secretary of the Infectious Diseases Group of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer and treasurer of the Critically Ill Study Group of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID). Dr Bassett is a member of many professional societies including the Infectious Diseases Society of America and ESCMID. He serves on the editorial board of several journals including Reviews in Medical Microbiology, Journal of Chemotherapy and Infectious Disease and is a reviewer for various international journals. He has been principal investigator for many trials on antibiotics and antifungal agents. Dr Bassetti has authored or co-authored over 150 papers published in peer-reviewed journals.
